Although it looks blue, it really has many tones of purples and blues. I dyed the yarn myself then knit it into this Vintage 5 Hour Baby Sweater Pattern. Turns out that it took me more than 5 hours. Since it was my second one in 2 weeks, it went quickly anyway. I used size 10.75 needles and a bulky yarn so I think the sizing is about 18 months.

Here is some wool I hand dyed. I've been inspired lately to dye yarn again. Although, now I have this serious dilemma about what to knit with 400 yards of wool.

The red turned out ok too. Again, what to do with just one ball?

So the blue turned out yummy after all...I mean not too bad. Kind of jewel tones. But what to do with just one skein of wool?

Beautiful yarn, with beautiful color mixing. I was totally loving how perfect things were going.

And then things went terribly different from my lovely plan.

Just a few diapers and a sleeper. This sleeper was done previously, but I thought it looked more like a laundry accident than a tie-dye. Now it is perfect!

Another infant soaker sack. This is a yarn dyed by me long ago. It is very obvious where I changed needle brands towards the bottom. I really like those Addi Turbos! I just don't have any of my own. Thank you to a very kind Marilyn for letting me borrow hers for a hat project! I may finish the hat and try to squeeze in one more of these sacks before I return them.

Poor lighting, but some more tie-dying.

Here are some pictures from the last tie dying we did. It took so long to post pics because my camera is acting up. These turned out a little more bold than the previous set of dyes. I am happy with the whole batch of dyed stuff- even though there is a green haze to everything- serious plumbing issue here just as I was rinsing/washing the whole batch.

A fun day filled with tie-dying! This is a preview of what we are excited to see tomorrow! It is always so fun when we unwrap, rinse, and wash! The kids have so much fun with the colors too!

I am in total love with how the 'swirl dye' project came out! I skipped the extra step of setting the dyes in the washer-oops! So, everything turned a bit lighter, but I still love it all! The kids had a great time too! Next time, I want to do the rest of the prefolds!

Here is an example of the swirl dying. First picture is after the shaving cream dye mixture sat overnight. Next picture is after that is washed off, before throwing in the washing machine.

I recently read about swirl dying. Similar to tiedye, but using shaving cream as the dye medium. This way, the dye can be patterned more uniform. Here is our first try, everything waiting overnight to soak in the dye. We used 7 colors. If you try this, I suggest several different patterns with just 3-4 colors, and at least 4 bonus sized cans of shaving cream. Feel free to email me for links to the instructions.

I think a couple of these are great, and a couple look like terrible laundry accidents. Those can be fixed. We are planning another 'dye day' in January. I still have a lot of prefolds and a few onsies that are sadly blank.

I had forgotten how easy and fun this is! The kids had a super great time too!
